  • Nail fungus alternative treatments:

Nail Fungus (onychomycosis) Nail fungus or onychomycosis is an infection of the nails occurring both on the hands and feet but certainly more often on the feet due to the environment that feet find themselves in. Nail fungus generally thrive in dark, moist environments, so when you consider wearing shoes and socks all day along with perspiration that occurs, it ends up being a perfect growth media for toe nail fungus. To get rid of fungus toe actually is a very difficult task. You see, the fungi grows underneath the nail making the fungul infection difficult to treat. As the fungul infection grows, it forces the nail up off the nail bed and the nail becomes thick, crumbly and discolored ranging in color from yellow to brown. It is not uncommon however for fungus infected nails to then spread to the remaining healthy nails on the foot. It is also not uncommon for nails to fall off and unfortunately, in most cases grow back the same way if not properly treated. Treatment of nail fungi can be difficult because of the fact that fungus thrives in "dark moist environments". Eliminating those factors can go a long way to reducing recurrence. There are both oral and topical medication treatments. The gold standard for treating onychomycosis in an otherwise healthy individual is the oral therapy. The most widely prescribed medication today is Lamisil tablets (Novartis), although there are certainly other oral antifungals that can be used. The newer generation of oral antifungals is very safe medications if properly used. Your doctor may prescribe one or two blood tests during the course of therapy to make sure there are no adverse effects. The topical nail fungus treatments are more effective and they have less or no side effects than oral anti fungi medications. Most topical anti-fungus medications are not effective as they are unable to penetrate deep into the skin or the nail bed.

    Ideal Treatment For Nail Fungus
Do you have brittle nails? It could be your toenails or your fingernails that are bothering you, but if they are brittle, and break easily, and perhaps turning a yellowish color, you may have a nail fungus.

This fungus is spread by contact with other people who have it, and is very hard to get rid of using normal measures. In order to cure nail fungus, it is necessary to penetrate the nail plate to reach the infection. Until recently, the best available solution included three systemic prescription anti-fungal medications and one prescription topical therapy. Currently, the most successful nail fungus remedy is terbinafine, known as Lamisil.

The reason Lamisil is the superior treatment for nail fungus is that it remains in the nail bed. Because the medicine remains in the nail bed, it significantly reduces the duration of the therapy. The time it takes to eradicate a fungal infection, as compared to the standard prescription, is shortened by up to 75%.

It is common for doctors to prescribe the medication, griseofulvin for nail fungus. This can take up to 2 years to entirely eliminate the problem. However, when using Lamisil to treat fungal infections, infected toenails require only up to three months of treatment and affected fingernails require merely six to eight weeks to be entirely healed. It is easy to see the enormous difference in the treatment time.

Another Lamisil benefit, if you have other prescriptions, is its low incidence of drug interactions with other medications. Taking Lamisil is also not taxing on your body and has only a slight risk of systematic effects, such as liver problems. The only noted side effect is diarrhea. However, this is extremely rare as Lamisil has generally been a very-well tolerated prescription medication choice for sufferers of nail fungus. Ask your doctor if she or he would recommend you use this product for your nails. You may be a candidate, and in a few months, your nail nightmare may finally be over!

    Candida And Probiotics
Probiotics are a popular dietary supplement that includes microorganisms that are beneficial to the human body. They have shown to be important to sufferers of Candida by helping to repopulate the “good” bacteria in the intestines that help to keep Candida under control. They help the body make many vitamins, such as bioten, vitamin B-6, folic acid and niacin. They aid the body in digestion and help to combat vaginal yeast infections in women.

Probiotics also have been shown to help tip the acid balance by secreting lactic acid and acetic acid in the intestines and vagina, helping to deprive harmful bacteria of the nutrients they need to flourish. The ‘good’ bacteria in the body make enzymes that are key to fighting an overgrowth of Candida in the body. Probiotics should be taken with a meal.

The bacteria that lives in the colon serves a vital function for the human body. Not only are they the bodies scavengers, helping to absorb any last nutrients that the intestines left behind, they also help to attack any evil bacteria lurking in the body and looking to make us sick. The main use of Probiotics is to help put the body back on an even keel, due to an outbreak of Candida, or other reasons, such as a poor, nutrient-lacking diet or even an overuse of antibiotics.

Probiotic treatment has been linked to a decrease in the likelihood of colon cancer since the micro organisms release compounds that are known to kill some yeasts, viruses and bacteria.

Probiotic treatment is even prescribed for sufferers of urinary tract infections and vaginitis. The possible benefits of probiotic treatment is only now being researched fully and more should become known over the coming years.

Live yogurt is the best known probiotic therapy. Women have known for years that the best way to stave off yeast infections after taking antibiotics is to enjoy a cup of yogurt, but the health benefits of this snack favourite may be wider than previously thought. Yogurt is cultured with the same sort of bacteria that live in your stomach and intestines and helps protect against the growth of Candida. Adding yogurt to your diet or to the diet of a child has shown to lessen intestinal and vaginal problems, diarrhea and Candida yeast growth. It is also thought that it helps with immune system health.

For Candida sufferers who are starting out with Probiotic treatment, be prepared for a few days of gastronomical problems. Increased abdominal pain, diarrhea and flatulence are common as the body gets itself back on an even keel.

This is still a very controversial treatment, since the connection between Candida and antibiotics killing off too much beneficial bacteria in the intestine hasn’t been proven. Do not begin any supplement program without first consulting a doctor. Probiotic treatment for Candida has many ardent followers, but the sneaky thing about Candida is that one treatment that works for one person will not necessarily work for all. Keeping a diary of your symptoms is an excellent way to see what treatment is working for your own Candida symptoms and what isn’t.

    Lamisil tablets side effects
I found your web site and decided to post some usefull information on Lamisil treatment. I think one should know about side effects before using any kind of medication especially once based on chemicals. In some cases, serious side effects have occurred in the liver and skin therefore Lamisil isn't for people with liver or kidney problems. Your doctor may do a simple blood test however. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take and if you have nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, skin yellowing or rash.
One should also know that no studies have been conducted to evaluate the safety of Lamisil Tablets in children.

    Different treatments of Tinea
    1. Tinea versicolor is treated with topical or oral medications. Topical treatment includes special cleansers including some shampoos, creams, or lotions applied directly to the skin.
Several oral medications are not as effective ecause of possible side effects, or interactions with other medications, the use of these prescription medicines should be supervised by your dermatologist

    Econazole Nitrate cream
My 6 years old came home one day few weeks ago with a red spot near her nose. We did not really worried much at first thinkig may be it was just an allergy to something. But when time went by the spot started getting more and more. I took her to a dermatologist and the derm said it was fungus. She prescribed Econozole Nitrate cream. We started using it 3 times a day hopping that the ugly - red fungus will go away. We used Econazole Nitrate for almost a month with first some improvements
and then it just stop helping.
I am worrying right now not knowing what to do? We have next appointment to se the derm i a week so hopefully she will give us something else.
i also wanted to ask here if anyone did treat fungus with the econazole nitrate cream?

    Judy S
    Judy,
Econazole nitrate or Spectazole Cream, is used to treat fungal skin diseases commonly called ringworm or (tinea). It is also can be used to treat athlete's foot (tinea pedis), "jock itch" (tinea cruris), a fungus infection of the entire body (tinea corporis), and a skin infection that causes yellow- or brown-colored skin eruptions (tinea versicolor). It is also often prescribed for yeast infections of the skin caused by candida fungus (cutaneous candidiasis).
Overall it it pretty good anti fungal medication. But in your case since it stop helping your child i would defenetly switch treatment and start using something else. Any type of fungus is very hard to treat the downside with chemical anti-fungus medications is that the fungus very soon develope resistance to it so you have to try someting else. Normaly doctors will prescribe stronger remedy. Remember though about the side effects and try to avoid them as much as you can and maybe consider use of natural anti-fungal treatments.
