Nail fungus is something most people know very lit
Nail fungus is something most people know very little about. We may see a few different advertisements or commercials about nail fungus treatment and prevention, but we really do not know what nail fungus actually is. Nail fungus is a fungal infection of the nail also known as onychomycosis in the medial world. Studies show that while nail fungus is a common occurrence, it will typically infect the toenails. Very seldom will nail fungus attack the fingernails. Further studies show that approximately twelve percent of the U.S. population has some sort of nail fungus and it is typical with age. People aged 40 and older are the most susceptible to nail fungus. Like many other forms of affliction, nail fungus is hereditary; it seems to run in families. Some others may be more susceptible to nail fungus as well such as those who have a suppressed immune system due to certain diseases or treatments. People who have been diagnosed with AIDS, have received transplants, are undergoing cancer treatments are at risk. In order to determine if you have nail fungus, you must make an appointment with a dermatologist. They will scrape your infected nail and submit it for microscopic examination. The nail will be carefully examined with a microscope and, occasionally, cultured, to determine what type of fungus is growing in the nail. Your dermatologist will determine if you have nail fungus and which type you have. Dermatophytes are nail fungus found in the toenails. Yeast is the type of nail fungus found in the fingernails. If your dermatologist has diagnosed either type of nail fungus, he or she will prescribe one of many varieties of treatments available to combat the infection. In treatment of nail fungus, there are prescriptions such as gels, creams, and lotions that may be affective in treating mild cases of nail fungus. For particularly harsh cases, your dermatologist may prescribe oral medication to clear the problem. In extreme cases, the doctor may remove the nail, either the section that is infected or the entire nail to assist in treatment of the nail fungus. The good news about nail fungus is, if you do get it, it can be treated fairly quickly. There are also steps you can take to avoid getting the infection or avoid getting it again. Talk to your dermatologist, he or she will provide you with the necessary information you need about nail fungus and how you can prevent it.

    Healthy Nails and Skin

The health of your nails tells a lot about your general
health. Your nails are mostly made up of a protein called
keratin, which protects the sensitive nerves at the tips of
your toes and fingers. Proper blood supply should keep your
nails pink. Nail problems usually indicate nutrient
deficiency or are caused by emotional or physical trauma.
The Signs and What You Can Do
    • Dry and brittle nails indicate a vitamin A and/or calcium
deficiency. Eat more carrots, sweet potato and spinach.
    • White nails may indicate anaemia or a liver or kidney
problem. Include wheatgress in your diet.
    • Vertical or horizontal ridges can indicate vitamin B
deficiency or a tendency to develop arthritis. Eat more
wholegrains, oily fish, avocado and dark green leafy
    vegetables.
    • Round or dark nail tips may indicate a vitamin B12
deficiency. Include shitake mushrooms, tempeh, trout,
    yoghurt, miso and sea vegetables.
    • Splitting nails indicate a reduced hydrochloric acid
    production. Eat umeboshi plums.
    • White spots can indicate zinc deficiency. Eat more
oysters, brown rice, pepitas, miso, sardines and legumes.
Avoid stress, smoking and excessive sweating.
    • Inflammation around the nail bed indicates a Vitamin C
deficiency or arthrities. Include broccoli and capsicum and
avoid red meat, dairy and smoking.
    • Cut and cracked nails mean your body is dehydrated. Drink
    more water.
    • Drittle nails can indicate thyroid problems, iron
deficiency or poor circulation. Exercise, relax and include
    wheatgrass in your diet.
    Healhy Nail Tips
    • Food high in calcium and magnesium are needed for nail
growth. Include wheatgrass and sea vegetables, dark greeen
leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds and tofu.
    • Essential fatty acids promote healthy hair, skin and
nails. Include flaxseed oil, soy products, royal jelly,
fish oil, parsley or pumpkin seeds.
    • Protein-rich food such as legumes, grains, nuts and seeds
    aid nail growth.
    • Sea vegetables are helpful due to their high mineral
content and ability to pull toxins from our body.
    • Broccoli, fish and onions are high in silicon and
sulphur, which are needed for strong nails.
    • Carrot juice is high in calcium and phosphoris, which
    strengthen nails.
    • Avoid chemicals on your hands as they dry them out, cause
nail problems and can lead to contact dermatitis.
    Feed Your Skin
Like your nails, what is going on inside your body and what
you expose it to directly affects your skin's health and
appearance. Proper sleep is important, as is avoiding
alcohol and environmental toxins and improving poor
digestion. Try to reduce exposure to sun in the afternoon
    as it dehydrates us.
Your Skin Care First Aid Kit
    • Bruising: include Vitamin C food such as broccoli, guava
    and blackcurrants.
    • Reduce inflammation and weeping lesions with essential
fatty acids found in fish, flax seeds, nuts, seeds and dark
    green lefy vegetables.
    • Lesions and growth: vitamins V foods such as legumes and
    wholegrains.
    • Psoriasis, acne and skin tone: Vitamin A from yellow,
green, red or orange foods and wheatgrass. Vitamin D (from
the Sun) also helps with psoriasis.
    • Eat umeboshi plums and follow rules for good digestion
like eating before 8pm, chewing properly, eating simply and
do nothing else while eating except eating!
    • Do not have alcohol or cigarettes if you want nice skin.
    • Avoid processed and refined foods.

Are Essential Oils Effective Candida Treatment?

Although candida treatment for men is typically the same as it
is for women, it's imperative that candida sufferers know there
are other remedies for infections aside from topical creams.
For instance, there are essential oils that can be used to
effectively treat different forms of candida infections.
Essential oil is created from natural substances (typically
plants and flowers). Essential oils have been used for
centuries for perfume, aromatherapy, and for their healing
properties. Essential oils are available at local health and
nutrition stores; however, you will find that there are many to
choose from, and not all are considered effective for treating
    candida.
The following are the essential oils used as effective candida
    treatment –
Tea Tree Oil – This essential oil is comprised of antiviral,
antibiotic and antifungal properties. It is primarily for
external use, and is applied as a topical ointment for small
wounds. It is considered effective treatment for a number of
candida infections including athlete's foot, acne, and other
fungal infections present on the skin.
Tea tree oil is considered a safe candida treatment for most
people. However, although rare, skin irritation or rash may
occur. Furthermore, tea tree oil is not recommended for
    pregnant women.
Eucalyptus – This essential oil provides excellent support to
the immune system, and can kill most staphylococcus bacteria,
which is a bacterium that can combine with candida to create
infections such as eczema. Eucaplytus provides the body with a
cooling effect. It can be used topically to treat candida
infections and is sometimes used in small amounts for oral
    supplements.
Eucalyptus is considered a safe external treatment. However,
it can be extremely toxic if ingested. This is why only a
small amount of eucalyptus is found in supplements. You should
never ingest eucalyptus without first seeking the advice of a
    health care provider.
Rose Geranium oil– This oil has an antibacterial effect that
has proven to be exceptionally effective as a candida treatment
because of its ester content. It is an exceptional skin care
product that promotes hygiene, and can be used topically as an
antiseptic for fungal infections such as athlete's foot. What
makes rose geranium oil so unique is geranium can eliminate
yeast without affecting natural bacterial flora. When
ingested, geranium also helps stimulate liver and pancreas
function, and can also sooth symptoms of breast pain in women
    during menses when applied topically.
This essential oil is considered safe to use and may only cause
minor side effects such as skin irritation for those with
sensitive skin. However, geranium oil is not recommended for
pregnant women as it is known to balance the hormonal system.
Oregano Oil – This oil is recognized for its aggressive
antifungal properties and can effectively take care of stubborn
candida fungal infections such as athlete's foot, nail fungus
and fungal infections of the scalp. Oregano oil can be used
both internally and externally as a candida treatment.
Oregano oil also as anti-inflammatory properties and can
effectively relieve pain when applied topically, as it
penetrates deep into damaged skin to provide relief. This oil
is considered safe and side effects are extremely rare.
Oreagano oil can cause a skin irritation or rash when applied
topically in those who are allergic or have sensitive skin.
Two other essential oils that are recognized for their
antifungal properties and may be effective at treating candida
    include patchouli and myrrh.
Before taking essential oils to treat candida infections, you
should consult your health care provider to make sure the oils
you are considering are safe for you to take. This is
especially true if you are pregnant or have any current or
pre-existing health problems. In addition, you should follow
all directions on products, and speak to a professional
herbalist to find out what the best methods for applying and
    ingesting these
