  • Dangers of Suicide-Linked Acne Drug Roaccutane/Accutane

The drug, manufactured by Roche is marketed as Roaccutane in Europe and Accutane in the US. In the UK the Medical Control Agency (MCA) released figures that since the introduction of Roaccutane in 1,795 adverse reactions have been recorded on their database, of which 23 were fatal, 14 being actual suicides. More than 200 of the adverse reactions were psychiatric with 20 reports of suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts. There were 80 reports of depression and 13 reports of mood swings. In the US there are believed to have been in excess of 500 suicides, attempted suicides and suicide ideation recorded for the drug. It is licensed in the UK for use as a drug that should only be used for severe cystic acne, a treatment of "last resort" but some 74% of UK patients prescribed Roaccutane had mild or moderate acne according to a study among UK dermatologists. There are over 40 independent studies published in medical journals linking the ingestion of the drug to the emergence of depression, psychosis and suicidal thoughts/actions. Accutane should only be used for severe recalcitrant cystic acne as a treatment of last resort, in accordance with the license. We believe that more than 80% of patients prescribed Accutane have mild or moderate acne, which is in violation of the license. A study published by Cunliffe (Leeds University Hospital) involving survey of several hundred dermatologists showed that 74% of patients were prescribed Accutane for mild or moderate acne. Patients should be psychiatrically assessed before and during Roaccutane treatment (for example by using the Hamilton scale of depression questionnaire) and in the event of an adverse reaction, the patient should be immediately taken off the treatment and the adverse event should be reported to the national health authority.

    No to roaccutane
I used to suffer from cystic acne and went on a course of roaccutane for six months on a dose of 60mg. I gave up after 4 as i was experiencing severe side effects. My self esteem is so bad that i cry before i go to school everyday. I thought my skin was going to be perfect after taking roaccutane and yes the cysts are gone but i have now developed acne all over my face which i didnt have before. I look worse than before. Im 18 years old and i feel like my life is over. i go to an all girls school and i feel so self concious around everyone. i just dont get why i had to go through all that for nothing. my friends want me to come out every weekend and i dont have the desire to because i feel so crap. no amount of make up is going to make me look any better!!!! my parents cannot cope with me crying all the time and so ive been diagnosed with depression due to a poor self image and i am taking medication for it for this year as i have my final exams before i begin college. I don't know if i can get through this year, i feel like there is no answer for my skin. Roaccutane is meant to be the best cure and if that didnt work what will?????????

    Accutane also known as Isotretinoin
While there are many medications on the market that claim to help control or eliminate acne, but one peculiar drug none seems to work as well as accutane. Most of the time patients seeking treatment are offered several creams, soaps, antibiotics and acne medications before moving into the use of accutane.

Accutane came onto the market as the brand name for the drug Isotretinoin several years ago and was proven to be quite effective through the patients taking the drug. While it began as a drug used only for severe acne cases, accutane has become more and more commonly used for moderate acne as well because of the widespread knowledge that the drug actually works on almost all cases of acne. The majority of patients will see a very noticeable difference in their skin within 4 weeks.

Accutane, while it works, is not without side effects. The major concern is related to females of child bearing age, as becoming pregnant while taking accutane or within a few months of stopping can cause severe birth defects including missing limbs and severe retardation. Doctors strongly recommend taking birth control pills while on accutane, and some even require it before dispensing a prescription to get filled. While on accutane, most doctors require monthly office visits where a pregnancy test will be given to ensure the drug is not continued if the patient is pregnant.

Other side effects of using accutane can include extreme dryness of lips, skin and eyes, itchiness, joint aching, and increase in cholesterol levels. Patients often are required to get a lipid profile every few months to track their cholesterol levels and make sure they are not increasing. In addition, several cases of severe depression and hallucinations leading to suicide have been somewhat linked to the use of accutane.

While it has not been definitely proven, there is now a warning for parents to watch their children's behavior and demeanor while they are taking this medication because it is a distinct possibility these psychiatric problems are linked with the drug use.

It is obvious that the use of accutane should not be taken lightly. If you are female, be extremely cautious if you are sexually active as the birth defects reported from the use of accutane during or directly before pregnancy are devastating. As with any drug, be sure to weigh all of the risks and benefits before deciding to take the medication, and talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have.
